New Memorial at Brighton College: Remembering the 149

To provide a visible memorial to the 149 Old Brightonians who died during the First World War, Brighton College has commissioned a new bronze statue to stand by the north entrance of the school’s chapel.

The memorial offers pupils and staff a place for quiet contemplation, and is a daily reminder of the boys and men of Brighton College, who gave up their lives in this conflict.

The school worked with Philip Jackson on the commission – a renowned sculptor with an outstanding international reputation. His design was based on pre-war photographs held in the Brighton College Archive. The school boater, lying by the boy’s feet, is also significant, having been re-introduced as part of the College’s commemorations.

On 17 June 2016, over 200 guests were invited to the unveiling of the new statue, including pupils and families who had been involved in our ‘Every Boy Remembered’ project, staff, alumni and descendants of the 149.
